If you’ve been outside in the past few days you’ve noticed that it’s hot. With heat indexes this weekend expected to top out 110° the RVA area is under a Heat Advisory. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

If you’re like me and have kids, staying in and laying on the couch while watching Netflix probably aren’t options for you (as much as you might like them to be!). If you’re looking for a way to get out of the house but still stay cool, check out Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden for some water play!

The garden itself opens early at 8 AM (Saturday and Sunday only, and only through Labor Day!) if you want to get out before the peak of the extreme temperatures, and the Water Play area opens at 9 AM and closes at 4:45 PM. Bring (or wear) a swimsuit and a towel and let the kids enjoy some gentle water sprays. Make sure you bring a swim diaper for the little ones who aren’t potty-trained.

My family has enjoyed a membership for the past two years (they make GREAT Christmas gifts!) and the water play is a great way for the little ones to burn some energy without overheating. Plus, no one’s going to say anything if you want to stick your own head in one of the misters!
